what to expect

You are ready for support, but not sure how therapy works.

You are not alone. Here’s exactly what to expect from your first steps with Throughline, so things can feel a little more clear and a lot more doable.

THE PROCESS

Consultation

We begin with a brief, pressure-free phone call. You can share what’s been going on, ask questions, and see if it feels like a good fit. If so, we’ll discuss next steps and scheduling.

FIRST SESSION

Your first session is a chance to slow down and get oriented. We’ll talk about what brought you in and what you’re hoping for, and review any questions so you feel grounded from the start.

ONGOING SESSIONS

Therapy is collaborative. We’ll move at a pace that feels safe for your nervous system, adjusting as needed to keep the work supportive and meaningful.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • I offer telehealth sessions for clients across North Carolina and see clients in person in the Raleigh/Wake County area. Whether you're on your couch with a cup of coffee or across the state, we can make it work. Many clients actually find telehealth more comfortable — there's something to be said for being in your own space when you're doing deep work.

  • If you're asking that question, it probably is. You don't need to be in crisis to benefit from therapy. A lot of my clients come in because something feels off — a pattern they keep repeating, a relationship that feels stuck, a sense that they're running on empty. Therapy is a space for reflection, problem-solving, and understanding yourself more deeply. That's valuable in any season of life, not just the hard ones.

  • Think of the first session as a conversation, not an interview. We'll talk about what brought you here, a little about your history, and what you're hoping to get out of our time together. I'll ask questions, but you set the pace. There's nothing you need to prepare or "perform." I'm not looking for a perfect story — I'm just getting to know you. By the end, we'll have a sense of whether we're a good fit and what working together might look like.

  • Most clients start with weekly sessions, especially in the beginning. Consistent sessions help us build momentum and allow real work to happen between visits. As things shift and stabilize, we may move to every other week or a check-in schedule that makes more sense for your life. This is always a conversation — there's no one-size-fits-all rhythm, and we'll figure out what works best together.

  • Honestly? Yes, sometimes. That's not a warning — it's actually a sign that something real is happening. Looking at old patterns, naming hard feelings, or saying something out loud for the first time can bring up a lot. But discomfort in therapy is different from distress. We move at your pace. You're always in the driver's seat, and my job is to make sure you feel grounded and safe even when we're working through something difficult. Growth rarely happens in the comfort zone — but it also doesn't require you to fall apart to move forward.

  • Yes — absolutely. Parent consultations are one of my favorite parts of this work. If your child is struggling, chances are you're struggling too, and you deserve support that's just for you. In parent sessions, we focus on understanding the "why" behind your child's behaviors, strengthening your own regulation, and finding practical ways to build a more connected relationship. You don't have to have it all figured out — you just have to be willing to explore it with me.

  • Throughline is currently in the process of paneling with Blue Cross Blue Shield and Aetna. Once credentialed, we will bill those insurances directly. For all other insurance plans, I am happy to provide a superbill — a detailed receipt you can submit to your insurance company for potential reimbursement through your out-of-network benefits. Not sure what your out-of-network benefits look like? A quick call to the member services number on the back of your insurance card can give you a clear picture. Many people are surprised to find they have more coverage than they expected.

  • The easiest way is to reach out through the contact form on this site or use the scheduling link to book a free 15-minute consultation. That call is low-pressure — it's just a chance for us to connect, make sure we're a good fit, and answer any questions you have before committing to anything. I'm glad you're here, and I'd love to hear from you.
